Simplicity 8430 – My Little Pony Leggings

Simplicity 8430Sewing a pair of leggings is so easy!!! This was really such a big surprise to me.  I used Simplicity 8430 and it was super easy to sew. I cut out a girls size 6 for my daughter. She’s skinny so the size 6 was too big for her in the waist/hip area when I first sewed it.  So I used my seam ripper to take the pants apart. Then I resewed them using a bigger seam allowance on the step where I joined the two legs together. This did the trick. The leggings fit so much better the second time around.

I wish I had known just how easy it is to make leggings. Because I would have been sewing ALL the leggings for my daughter…lol. But seriously, my five-year-old daughter loves to wear leggings. She wears leggings 90% of the time even during the winter despite the fact that she has warmer pants like corduroys and jeans. However, I try to pick my battles when it comes to her fashion likes and I let her wear her leggings most of the time.

With that being said, I decided that I would attempt to make a pair of leggings for her. I had initially purchased the Simplicity 8430 pattern because I liked the shirt options. Then one day when I was looking at I saw some stretch knit My Little Pony fabric and I knew I had to make my daughter a pair of My Little Pony leggings.

Both of my kids, love My Little Pony. So I knew my daughter would love having a pair of My Little Pony leggings. I was right! She loves these leggings and she even was eager to take photos while wearing them for this blog post. I usually have to bribe her to get her to take pictures for my blog. However, for this post she had a different poise for every pony, she could think of from the show.

Now that I know just how easy it is to sew leggings. I’m looking forward to making lots of leggings for my daughter and for myself. I’ve been trying to keep an eye out for cute stretch knit fabrics. I  was at Hobby Lobby recently and I saw they have Minnie Mouse stretch knit fabric that would also make a pair of cute leggings.

If you are new to sewing you should definitely try sewing leggings. And here is a tip for hemming knits. Use a twin needle when hemming to fabric to prevent it from getting wavy.  If you search youtube you can find a video to show you how to use a twin needle for your particular sewing machine brand.

I pretty much live in leggings. Regular pants are just to restricting and the leggings now-a-days are super stylish. I could see how sewing them would be easy but I’m sure I would be lost with a sewing machine and a pattern. Of course your little model is adorable.

This was the easiest pattern to use because it was only one pattern piece. So if you do want to try sewing with a pattern a pair of leggings would be a great first project to start with.

The leggings look so comfortable. They don’t look easy to make at all, but I am glad you found it easy to make. She looks cute in them.

My daughter lives in leggings too, but I can’t blame her because I wear them around the house too. I wear jeans when I’m going out. 🙂
