I’ve been having so much fun with the whole sewing process. I love picking out different patterns and finding fabric that I want for the specific pattern that I’m sewing. That I’ve decided that I’m going to try to primarily sew my own clothes for the time being (not all of my clothes but as many as I can). I’m really in need of cute summer shirts. So I’ve been trying to find patterns that are cute yet not too difficult to sew. So I was really happy to find the New Look A6511 pattern. It’s an easy pattern and there are four different options for items to make. Three different shirt options in varying lengths and then one dress option.
I choose to make View B first. It’s a sleeveless shirt with a small gathered ruffle at the bottom. I choose to use a yellow cotton ethnic print fabric that I bought from Jo-Ann at the begging of the year to make this shirt. If you read my post about my Spring Sewing Plans then you might remember this fabric. I actually wanted to use it for a different pattern initially. However, when I bought this pattern I thought the fabric would actually look better as this shirt than the one I had originally planned to make with it.
I’m really glad that I used this fabric with New Look A6511 because it looks fantastic. I really enjoyed making this shirt because it was very quick and easy to make. Plus it fits me great (I cut out the size 6 pattern). I didn’t have any problems making this shirt which I was really happy about. This pattern was truly very easy to make and I would definitely recommend a beginner trying to make it. To make this shirt it only used three pattern pieces. For me having only a few pattern pieces is always great because it gives me fewer opportunities for making mistakes. 🙂

I deviated from the pattern instructions for one thing. The pattern instructs you to make a thread loop and to sew on a button to close up the back of the shirt. However, I opted to sew on a hook and eye closure instead. I have lots of hook and eye closures in my sewing materials kit. And I thought this option would be easier to sew. I’ve never sewn a thread loop so I was not sure how durable it would be. But I know that the hook and eye closure will be durable.
I loved this shirt so much that I will definitely be making it again. I just need to buy some cute fabric so I can make it again.
