McCall’s M6955 Pattern Review: I Sewed My First Dress

I’m so excited to finally share the dress that I made for myself. I had been wanting to learn how to sew for years. and I’m so happy that I finally decided to indeed learn how to sew this year. It’s been a lot of fun choosing patterns and deciding what fabric to use with the patterns to create something unique.

McCall’s M6955 an Easy Pattern

For this sewing project, I used McCall’s M6955 pattern. This is one of the “Easy” patterns that McCall’s offers. I’m happy to say that I was very pleased with how easy this pattern is. Unlike the last McCall’s easy pattern I tried to sew, this one was very easy to follow. The directions were very clear and really easy for beginners to understand.

Learning New Sewing Techniques

I’m also happy that I was able to learn some new techniques while making this dress. It was my first time sewing darts for the bodice of a dress. The darts help shape the top portion of the dress. This was also my first time using the understitch technique, which helps your lining to lay flat when it is attached to the outer fabric. I also learned how to sew a zipper into a garment. Sewing a zipper was a lot easier than I thought it would be.

I was really pleased with how well the dress looks. While, it wasn’t perfect it was definitely a good first attempt at making a dress for myself. The one mistake that I noticed, was that the top of the bodice doesn’t lay flat on one side. I’m not sure what I did that made this happen. But it’s not a huge deal since it’s not very noticeable.

Overall, I think McCall’s M6955 is a great pattern for a beginner to try out. I’ll probably try making this again next Spring when the weather starts to warm up. I still have a few warm weather projects that I’m going to try to finish up before the weather gets too cool. But I really like the fit of the dress a lot since it’s very comfortable. So it’s definitely worth making again.

I LOVE it! It’s so soft and feminine and FUN. Good job!
There is no end to the damage I’d cause if I learned to make my own dresses. You know how dress obsessed I am!

Thanks Tamara!!! I’ve become a little obsessed with fabric since I started sewing. I think of all of the possibilities for cute clothing I could make. I rarely wear dresses during the week, but I think that’s going to change as I begin to sew more and more dresses.

Thanks Dean!!! You should give it a try. They always have classes avaialble at fabric stores like Jo-Ann. One class would probably be enough to get you started. Plus Youtube is very helpful.

Thanks Suzie!!! I dreamed about learning to sew for years, but I really thought it was going to be hard. I wish I had not given into my fears for so many years. Because I really am enjoying learning to sew and it’s not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be.

My Aunt is a seamstress, but I seem to suck at sewing. I love how you mentioned this is beginner friendly so I may purchase it to see how mine comes out.

Thanks Stacie!!! There are so many cute patterns available these days. If you do decide to pick it back up. But I understand about finding time. It does take a lot of time to make your own clothing. I would sew everyday if I only had the time. 🙂

Thanks Amila!!! I compeletly understand. It takes me a while to make something because I usually don’t get a chance to sew everyday.

Hello – I realize this is a comment on an old post of yours, but I have been wanting to try and sew a dress for myself and came across this review. Thank you so much! I was able to still find the pattern on Amazon and just ordered it. I hope mine looks half as nice as yours. 🙂

    • Reply Sonya July 8, 2020 at 1:53 pm

Hi Bridget, you can do it! Even if it doesn’t turn out perfect you are building your sewing skill set with each make. I’ve been sewing for a few years now and a lot of my makes still aren’t perfect, but I’m sew much better than when I started out. 🙂 I hope you enjoy making and wearing your first dress!
