My Fall Sewing Plans

The weather has finally cooled down here in Central Arkansas and it actually feels like fall. As the weather has started to cool down I’ve been thinking about what items I should try to sew during fall. I’ve been thinking about what items I really need in my wardrobe. Also, what items I think I actually have the time, skill level, and money to make.

What my Fall Wardrobe is Missing

*Dresses- I really need more long sleeve dresses to wear to church.

*Pants- A lot of my pants are getting old and my favorite pair of jeans is starting to get a hole near one of the back pockets. 🙁 But on the bright side, I have been wanting to try sewing pants. Now my need for pants is giving me the courage to tackle something new. 🙂

*Skirts- I have a few fall/winter skirts, but I would really like to have more. Skirts are such an easy option to pair with a sweater and boots when you want to look a little nicer than usual. Plus, I have not made myself a skirt yet and this is something that I also really want to try sewing.

*Kimono- This will be perfect for layering with a t-shirt when the days are a little warmer than usual.

My Plans

I often think I’m capable of sewing way more than what I actually have time for. So in an effort not to over plan, I’m only planning on sewing four items between now and the end of the year. I definitely think that four items are doable. So what are my four item?

  1. A Kimono– I’ve already started making this project. It’s a DIY Kimono that I’m making using instructions from a sewing book that I checked out from the library. This kimono is being made from simple self-measurements, not a pattern. I only have two more steps to go before it’s finished. 🙂
  2. A Plaid Shirt Dress– I’ve also already started on a plaid shirt dress that will be perfect for fall. I’m using the Simplicity 8014 pattern view C for my dress.
  3. A Pair of Jeans– Like I mentioned earlier my favorite pair of jeans is beginning to get a hole in them. Meaning this is the perfect time to try sewing myself a pair of jeans. I’m thinking that I will use Simplicity 8516, which is a MiMi G pattern. I want to use this pattern because Mimi G has step by step videos on youtube showing you how to sew this pattern. Plus, this pattern has fitting options (slim fit, curvy fit, and average fit) for different body types. I think the slim fit will be a great option for me. I’m not sure what if I will purchase a regular stretch denim or stretch corduroy to make these jeans.
  4. A Skirt- I’ve been wanting to make Simplicity 8175 for a while. I even purchased some really nice brocade fabric for this pattern. However, I recently read that brocade is a delicate fabric and is not forgiving to sewing mistakes that involve using a seam ripper. Therefore, you should save your brocade fabric for makes that you are pretty certain you will not make a mistake with. Since I’ve never sewn this pattern before I will not be using the brocade fabric that I have. I’m thinking about using a black denim fabric that I used for a dress that I made earlier in the year.
This is the nice brocade fabric.

I will probably make my skirt using this black denim that I used for this dress.

Hopefully, all of the projects go smoothly and I will be able to have them all completed before the end of the year.

Are you working on anything special?

Looks like you have great sewing plans for the fall! I need to get some long sleeved dresses as well. I can’t wait to see how the plaid shirtdress and jeans turn out, especially. I am a huge fan of shirtdresses. I would wear them everyday if I could lol.

I only have one other shirtdress, but I wish I had more. 🙂 If this one turns out nice, I will probably try to sew another one.

I like your plan. I cannot wait to see your first pair of pants. But in the meantime, I think the shirt dress is a good idea.

I’m almost finished with the shirtdress. I can’t wait to see how the pants turn out too. Over Thanksgiving weekend I bought some dark denim fabric for my pants project.
