5 Ways I Practice Self-Care

**Disclosure: As a brand ambassador for Central Arkansas McDonald’s I am being compensated for this post. However, all opinions are 100% mine.**

The topic of self-care is popular these days and there is a good reason why it’s buzzworthy. Because so many of us need to be reminded to take good care of ourselves. I know I am often guilty of putting myself last. I’m always thinking about what my kids and husband need that I often leave my own needs last on my list. That’s why I’ve been making a conscious effort to practice self-care lately. Practicing self-care allows me to function at my best and I know that my husband and kids like it when I’m at my best.

There are five main ways I like to practice self-care. These are things that I can do to keep me healthy, help me to relax, and to bring more joy into my day.

Eating Lots of Fruits & Vegetables

Eating lots of fruits and vegetables is one way that I practice self-care because it helps me feel better. One of my favorite ways to eat vegetables is by making a big salad for lunch or dinner. A big salad is a great way to eat a few servings of vegetables in one meal. When I’m at home I like to keep chopped and washed lettuce, carrots, celery, and bell peppers in my salad spinner.

But for days when I’m away from home and I want to eat a salad, McDonald’s is my go-to place for a fresh, delicious salad. Their Premium Salads are a blend of baby spinach, baby kale, romaine, red leaf lettuce, and ribbon cut carrots. McDonald’s has two different Premium Salads available: the Bacon Ranch Salad and the Southwest Salad. The Southwest salad is my favorite. Besides being delicious, I love that McDonald’s Premium Salads contain at least 2.5 cups of vegetables.  So I can feel good knowing that I can still practice self-care and feed my body lots of vegetables when I’m eating away from home.

I’m a person who loves sweets, but I try to avoid eating a lot of sugar.  So fruit is my go to snack. Eating fruit gives me the sweetness that I crave, along with the nutrients that my body needs to function at its best. I love that during the summer there is such a great variety of in-season fruit to choose from. Cherries, peaches, nectarines, and watermelon are some of my favorites.

Getting Adequate Sleep

Another way that I practice self-care is by getting an adequate amount of sleep. I know that everyone has different sleep needs to feel their best, but at least seven hours of sleep is a must for me. There are times when I get less than this and I just have a difficult time being my best.

Making Time for my Hobbies

One of my favorite ways to practice self-care is making time for my hobbies. I learned how to sew last year and I try to make time to do a little sewing each day. It makes me feel good when I get to spend some time alone creating something. I also enjoy watching TV and reading, so I try to make time to catch my favorite shows each week and read a little before going to bed.

My favorite shirt!!! And it’s one that I sewed for myself 🙂

Exercising

Exercising is one form of self-care that I really have to work extra hard at to be consistent with. I love the way I feel when I’m exercising, but I have a bad habit of telling myself that I’m going to exercise after I get through doing X, Y, & Z. Sometimes that doesn’t happen, so I’ve been trying to make myself exercise as soon as I think about it. Because I really feel so much better physically and mentally when I’m exercising consistently. My favorite way to get in my exercise for the day is using the elliptical my listening to music or doing some relaxing yoga.

Treats

Treats are a must when it comes to self-care for me. Some of my favorite ways to treat myself are by buying new sewing patterns, fabric, a magazine, or a cookbook. I know I mentioned earlier that I try to limit how much sugar I eat, which is why I really enjoy a sweet treat when I do eat one. McDonald’s is a great place to go when I want to treat myself. They have so many yummy options to choose from ice cream sundaes, milkshakes, cookies, pies, ice cream cones, McFlurries, and Minute Maid Slushies. Lately, my go-to sweet treat from McDonald’s has been a Minute Maid Slushie.  There are three different flavors: Cherry Limeade, Fruit Punch, and Orangeade. I’ve tried all three flavors and Orangeade is my favorite.

At McDonald’s you can save money with the McDonald’s app. Currently, when you Buy One Minute Maid Slushie, you can get a 2nd Minute Slushie for FREE with the McDonald’s app.

🙂 It helps to keep some washed and cut fruits and veggies in the fridge.

Self-care is so important and it’s something I bypass daily. I really need to take care of myself more but it’s been hard with my crazy schedule. I always eat lots of fruit and veggies, my hobbies are part of my business which makes working so much a lot easier.

There are days when it’s hard for me to squeeze some self-care into the day also.
